By Keitha Glace June 28, 2024
Saint Lucia’s laws provide a pathway for persons born overseas to acquire Saint Lucian citizenship by descent, based on their lineage to a Saint Lucian by birth. First Generation – Children of Saint Lucians by Birth Status: In place since Independence (1979) Since Saint Lucia became an independent nation in 1979, a child born outside of Saint Lucia to at least one parent who is a Saint Lucian by birth has been entitled to Saint Lucian citizenship by descent. This long-standing provision enables children of Saint Lucians abroad to inherit their Saint Lucian nationality, once the necessary documentation proving parentage is submitted. Second Generation – Grandchildren of Saint Lucians by Birth Status: Newly enacted under the current SLP Administration (2024 amendment) A recent amendment to the Citizenship of Saint Lucia Act now extends eligibility to second-generation descendants. This means that a person born outside Saint Lucia with at least one grandparent who is a Saint Lucian by birth may now apply for Saint Lucian citizenship, subject to meeting the documentary requirements and due process. This progressive development enables more Saint Lucian descendants, particularly those living in the diaspora for two generations to formally reconnect with Saint Lucia through citizenship. What Applicants Should Know Applicants must provide documentary proof establishing their lineage to a Saint Lucian by birth. Requirements may include: Long-form birth or baptism certificates linking the family line (child–parent–grandparent) Proof of the ancestor’s Saint Lucian citizenship by birth Supporting identity and civil status documents as required by the competent authority The Consulate General will continue to provide guidance and support to those seeking to apply under either provision. This information is provided as a public guide. For full legal details, applicants must consult the Citizenship of Saint Lucia Act and its most recent amendment.
