Saint Lucia - Martinique Health Cooperation

Supporting Medical Access for Saint Lucians in the French Territories

One of the most impactful areas of collaboration between Saint Lucia and Martinique is in the field of health care. Over the years, the Consulate General has worked closely with local hospitals in Martinique to support Saint Lucian nationals requiring specialized medical attention not available on the island.

The principal partner in this cooperation is the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Martinique (CHUM), which offers advanced medical services through structured international referral mechanisms.

How the Referral Process Works

Health referrals from Saint Lucia to Martinique are made through a “doctor-to-doctor” appointment system. This means that the patient’s primary physician or specialist in Saint Lucia must contact a corresponding medical professional or department at CHUM to initiate the referral and schedule the consultation or treatment.

This system ensures:

  • Proper medical case coordination
  • Clinical responsibility and continuity of care
  • Efficient processing of patient information
  • Improved patient outcomes

Contacting CHUM’s International Desk

To complete the referral and appointment process, the international desk at CHUM must be contacted directly. They serve as the liaison between the hospital’s departments and referring physicians abroad.
